2015 Chubb US Junior Championship, CORK International and Youth Laser Radial World Championship

Dear Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation,

I would like to thank the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation for their generous contributions. The assistance was greatly appreciated, as it enabled me to compete in the Chubb US Junior Championship and both CORK International and Youth Laser Radial World Championship.

Chubb was an enlightening experience. I met many of the best single-handed sailors from across the country. The regatta was run smoothly, despite the race venue being a 4-hour drive from the Boston airport. The regatta consisted of 4 days of racing. 2 races the first day and 3 the rest. I started out the regatta well, winning the first four races and then finishing second in the next two. Unfortunately, I had a bad third day, which dropped me into second, the position I stayed in for the rest of the competition.

I then flew back home for the next day I would be heading out to Kingston, Canada with my family. First was CORK International, or better know as Canadian Youth Champs. The first day was very light and we were only able to complete one race. I was fortunate to win that first race, tying me for first with two other competitors (we were split into 3 different fleets: Yellow, Blue, and Red). The next few days were also favorable conditions, but as we posted more scores, it was apparent who the real leaders were. I finished 17th out of 167 Radials, a score I am proud of.

Then came Worlds, just a day later and at the same venue. There were over 190 boys and 55 girls from 38 countries competing. The conditions were shifty, and we had a big storm roll through on 4 of the 6 days of racing. I was able to qualify in Gold, but had a difficult time competing against the best from all around the world. Nonetheless, I finished 41st in Gold and 7th in under 17.

Overall, I had a blast this summer, travelling to new places and meeting and competing against new people. I can't wait for next summer when I get to travel to Ireland for Radial Worlds yet again.

Sincerely,
Joseph Hou
